Mall shooting in Allen, Texas: Suspect identified, survivors describe an attack that killed 8 and injured 7

 

According to a senior law enforcement source involved with the investigation, Mauricio Garcia, 33, has been named as the suspect in Saturday's mass shooting in Allen, Texas.


Garcia had at least one additional weapon on him when he was fatally shot in front of the mall, according to the source, in addition to the AR-15-style rifle that was discovered nearby. Additionally, police discovered numerous weapons in his car.



CNN spoke with neighbors who saw the FBI and police on Saturday evening visiting a house at an address that matches Garcia's parents. According to residents, they arrived there around an hour after the gunshot and sealed off the street for several hours.


According to a source with the law enforcement agency, Garcia was residing in some kind of temporary housing. According to The Dallas Morning News, the suspect was a guest at a Dallas extended-stay motel.


By the time the terrible spree on Saturday came to an end, eight people had died and at least seven others had been hurt in the carnage in the wealthy suburb of Allen, approximately 25 miles north of Dallas.


Shoppers in a panic were captured on camera shouting and hiding behind rows of vehicles in the parking lot of the Allen Premium Outlets in Texas. Employees, customers, and families with young children fled the large building and took cover in storage areas or back hallways, according to witnesses who spoke to CNN.


An Allen Police Department officer who was in the mall for a different call shot and killed the shooter, according to the authorities. Investigators think that the shooter acted alone.


In a picture acquired by CNN, the gunman can be seen lying on the ground next to an AR-15-style weapon after being shot. He's covered in black body armor, and it looks like he has several additional magazines fastened to his chest armor.


According to Allen Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd, at least nine people were sent to trauma centers, two of whom have now passed away. A medical facility in the Dallas region claimed to have treated patients as young as 5 years old.

 

As they were led away from the site, hundreds of customers were seen on aerial video weaving among police cars and ambulances, some of whom had their hands raised. The video also appears to show at least three bodies outside the mall that are draped in sheets.


Republican US Representative Keith Self, whose congressional district includes Allen, claimed that the attack may have been more deadly if it weren't for law enforcement's prompt action.


We owe a debt of gratitude to the first responders who sprinted in the direction of the gunfire and took immediate action to eliminate the danger, Self added.


However, the bloodshed represented yet another slaughter at a location where the general people felt safe for a long time, such as supermarkets, schools, and Fourth of July parades.


It also occurred the same week that an Atlanta hospital was attacked by a shooter, who killed one lady and injured four more.


According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were around 200 mass shootings in the US in the first five months of this year. The nonprofit organization and CNN both define mass shootings as incidents in which four or more people—excluding the shooter—are shot.
