Gwyneth Paltrow ski crash trial: Paltrow testifies that the accident wasn't her fault.
She has been accused of causing an incident at Utah’s Deer
Valley Resort in 2016 that left a man seriously injured.
In a civil lawsuit brought against her, Gwyneth Paltrow was
put on the witness stand on Friday. There, she vehemently refuted claims that
she was to blame for a 2016 accident at Utah's Deer Valley Resort that left a
man critically injured.
Terry Sanderson, 76, is suing Paltrow for $300,000, claiming
she crashed into him when they were skiing, causing a concussion, brain
damage, and four fractured ribs. Sanderson, though, is accused of being at
fault by Paltrow, who also claims that he is abusing her fortune.
Gwyneth Paltrow testified on Friday that "Mr. Sanderson clearly
hit me on the ski slope and that is the truth."
The actor and Sanderson disagree over who was farther up the
slope at the time of the collision and who was hit. The person ahead or going
downhill has the right of way, according to the Deer Valley website.
After the jury heard testimony from Sanderson's daughters,
an eyewitness, and medical professionals on Friday, Gwyneth Paltrow was brought to the
witness stand.
As she felt a body press against her back and saw two skis
sliding between her own, Gwyneth Paltrow claimed she was "gently" gliding
down the slope. Paltrow claimed that after she and Sanderson tumbled to the
ground, she briefly froze before getting agitated and screaming at Sanderson. Gwyneth Paltrow expressed regret for her reaction and said she felt
violated at the time and thought the accident might have been a sexual assault. She described feeling a figure pressing against her and
hearing a very odd grunting sound. According to Gwyneth Paltrow, she stayed until a ski instructor who
had been helping one of her kids informed her she could leave. According to
Paltrow, the instructor wrote a report detailing the incident and ensured
Sanderson was ok. Gwyneth Paltrow is asking for legal bills to be paid as well as
$1 in damages. In response to questions from Sanderson's attorney Kristin
VanOrman concerning an eyewitness account of the collision that contradicts
Paltrow's own, Paltrow questioned the witness' veracity and asserted that she
was the one who was struck. Craig Ramon, a friend of Sanderson's who was visiting the
resort with him as a member of a meetup group, is the witness. He stated in his
testimony on Tuesday that he was around 35 feet higher than Sanderson when the
incident occurred. Ramon claimed that after hearing a scream, he quickly
witnessed Paltrow slamming Sanderson from behind. He saw them both fall to the
ground and stopped next to them, claiming that while Sanderson was face down in
the snow for almost two minutes, Paltrow got back up. After the mishap, Paltrow left around four minutes later
without introducing herself or asking if Sanderson was okay or required medical
assistance, according to Ramon. Ramon told the court that he flagged ski patrol after he and
Sanderson tried to continue skiing downhill, refuting claims made by Paltrow's
attorneys that a ski patrol member stopped by the scene of the accident. Ramon
claimed he requested assistance to get Sanderson to the resort's nurse's
station since Sanderson was obviously "not OK." When Sanderson's attorneys rest their case, Paltrow's
attorneys are anticipated to begin their defense the following week.
