Jerry Springer’s cause of death revealed

Jerry Springer, a prominent television presenter and former mayor of Cincinnati, passed away on Friday from pancreatic cancer, his longtime agent Linda Shafran told CNN.

"Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried," Jene Galvin, a lifetime friend and spokesman for the family, said in a statement. "Whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word."

His chat show for tabloids, "The Jerry Springer Show," debuted in 1991 and enjoyed enormous syndication success. After more than 4,000 episodes, it came to an end in 2018.

Due to the many absurd guests he had, both Springer and his program received criticism frequently for contributing to the rise of "trash TV."

In 2010, as "The Jerry Springer Show" marked its 20th year on broadcast, Springer told CNN that he did not mind being referred to as the "grandfather of trash TV," saying: "I think it's probably true. We were probably one of the first shows to present some of the outrageousness we have, although I'm not sure what the award for that is.

Prior to his passing, Springer kept his cancer diagnosis a private matter.
