On the 'The Voice' debut, Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper bring in the 'rookie season' with significant victories.
The "Voice's" new coaches, Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper, are turning up the heat, but Blake Shelton, the show's reigning veteran, still poses a challenge.
With Shelton and coach Kelly Clarkson, Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper turned their chairs for country rock crooner Neil Salsich during the Season 23 debut on Monday night. With his remarkable range and energetic performance of Hank Williams' "Honky Tonk Blues," Salsich astounded the coaches.
Chance remarked, "I don't know a lot about country music, but the texture of your voice - the tone, the range you had, and also the runs you're doing - might be interesting. "Why not pair a rapper with a country singer? And it'd be awesome if I plagiarized a country (artist) from Blake.
Country storytelling is my thing, Horan continued. Blake absolutely cannot tell you a story.
Salsich ultimately settled on Shelton as his coach nonetheless.
Shelton declared, "This is my final season, and I'm going out with a bang. "I don't give a damn if these individuals are new; I ought to be courteous. Ignore that. They are falling.
Sorelle, a sister trio from Ohio, won over Chance and Shelton with their vibrant harmonies on their cover of “Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy” by Queen.
“In hip-hop, artists like Kendrick Lamar and Drake, they find younger artists like you guys that put together harmonics and sample those, and those become the biggest records that you hear on the radio,” Chance said. “I would love to put you guys in (the) position to be able to create some of that stuff from scratch.”
Then Shelton subtly mocked Chance's pitch. He advised the group, "You could pick Team Blake and make your own record, or you could pick Chance and hope to be featured on somebody else's record someday.
Chance the Rapper is bringing a free concert and festival to Ghana, saying, "I wish I could live there."
Chance, though, was not about to allow Shelton to have the final say. Using a lyric from the Nipsey Russell song "What Would I Do If I Could Feel," the "Holy" emcee asked Sorelle to improvise a beautiful, three-part harmony.
Sorelle decided to join Team Chance after seeing how well Chance did it.
On Sorelle, chance "totally slayed me," Shelton remarked. The next thing I know, he is creating a record in real-time before your eyes. I was aware that it was finished for me once that occurred.

Ross Clayton, a singer from Oklahoma, won a four-chair turn for his charming rendition of Keith Urban's "Blue Ain't Your Color" and his soft country vocals.
Horan was adamant about persuading Clayton even if his side still lacked a singer. The former member of One Direction stood up and turned his colleague coaches' chairs away from Clayton by pushing buttons on their chairs.
"Ignore whatever any of them said. I turned them around for that reason. Horan stated, "I didn't want to hear any more nonsense. I was on a similar program when I was 16 years old. There are those of my supporters who would genuinely want to adopt you.
Horan's chair-spin joke helped Clayton join Team Niall, ending his unleaky streak.
Shelton remarked, "I feel like Niall will take my spot on this program. Playing those types of shady games gives me faith that he can be the liar he has to be going forward to cover for Team Blake.
During his passionate acoustic performance of Otis Redding's "A Change Is Gonna Come," soul singer Noivas captured the attention of the judges and soon earned a four-chair turn.
Chance said to the 30-year-old singer, "You are an exceptional talent, and I would love to give you the stage to show yourself to the world. "You are a generational voice that has to be heard,"
Horan responded, comparing Noivas' soulfulness to Stevie
Wonder, a legendary R&B singer.
Horan remarked, "I haven't seen somebody with such intensity. Although I don't create this type of music, sometimes the best things occur when complete opposites mix.
But, Chance was ready to stand out, so he walked over to each coach's lit-up name on stage and quickly changed it to his own. There is only one option available, he said. "I want you to be on Team Chance and I want you to win this show."
The humorous pitch won Noivas over, and he decided to hire Chance as his coach.
It's a rookie season, and Chance, a fellow rookie, has Noivas, which makes me very happy, stated Horan. "He will carry him all the way."
