Put on your seatbelts because Universal's "Fast X" is rushing into theaters this weekend after earning $7.5 million in American box office previews on Thursday.

It is expected that the opening weekend of the tenth "Fast and Furious" film would surpass $60 million. Between the 2019 "Hobbs and Shaw" spinoff ($60 million) and 2021's "F9: The Fast Saga" ($70 million), it would rank as the seventh-highest premiere in the franchise. Both of those movies earned $7.1 million and $5.8 million from Thursday previews, respectively.

"Fast X" had a bleak prognosis in the United States since "F9" was released during the pandemic, when almost 80% of theaters were still closed. However, a significant portion of the worldwide box office receipts for "Fast and Furious" came from international sales. In its debut weekend, "Fast X" hopes to earn $220 million overseas. "Fast X" will need to maintain its momentum after it debuts in order to turn a sizable profit after spending $340 million on production and $100 million on marketing.

In "Fast X," which features a new angry antagonist played by "Aquaman" actor Jason Momoa, Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto reappears. Dante Reyes, the character he plays, is revealed to be the son of "Fast Five" villain Hernan Reyes. Since Dom and the Fast Family murdered his father and took his family's wealth during their devastating bank vault heist—the one when they carried a sizable vault from their automobiles through the streets of Rio de Janeiro—he has had a beef with them.

Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, Helen Mirren, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Charlize Theron are among the numerous "Fast and Furious" franchise regulars who are back. Newcomers are entering the fray, such as "Captain Marvel" actress Brie Larson, "Reacher" actor Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchior, Leo Abelo Perry as Dom's son, and Rita Moreno as Dom's grandmother. The film's director, Louis Leterrier, has already been tapped to return for the franchise's 11th and ostensibly final installment.

"Fast X" is anticipated to dethrone Disney and Marvel Studios' "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which has dominated the charts since its release two weeks ago, as the box office king. Disney, though, will return the following week with the live-action version of "The Little Mermaid."
