Trump says that he will be detained the next week
Former President Donald Trump alleges in a social media post that he will be jailed next week.
Although there has
been no formal announcement of any plans for an indictment, the claim comes as
a New York prosecutor considers pursuing Trump in connection with hush money
paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Trump has been the
subject of multiple criminal investigations, but the Daniels case is the one
that has been ongoing since 2016. Trump announced on his
platform Truth Social on Saturday morning that "illegal leaks"
suggested he will be detained on Tuesday, and he then called for protests. Susan Necheles,
Trump's attorney, told NPR that the president's speculation is "based on
media stories" and that the prosecution should be held accountable for
concealing material from Trump's legal team. Necheles made the
following statement: "Because this is a political prosecution, the
District Attorney's office has engaged in a pattern of leaking everything to
the press, rather than consulting with President Trump's attorneys as would be
done in a regular case. Trump, who plans to
run for president in 2024, defended himself on Truth Social and claimed that he
had not broken any laws, though he did not say what he anticipated being
charged with. He also said that the Manhattan District Attorney's Office was
"corrupt & highly political," and that he has not committed any
crimes. Whether the Manhattan
District Attorney's Office will soon seek an arrest warrant for Trump was not
addressed by the office. Yet, according to the
Associated Press, law enforcement authorities in New York are debating security
measures in anticipation of a possible indictment of Trump in the upcoming
weeks. If it does happen,
Trump would become the first former president in American history to be charged
with a crime. Despite Trump's claims
that there is an arrest warrant, a campaign spokesman for Trump, Steven Cheung,
claimed the former president plans to attend a rally in Texas the next weekend. Andrea Bernstein of
WNYC provided reporting assistance.
