Everything Everywhere wins best picture at the 2023 Oscars and dominates the night
In Los Angeles At the Oscars on Sunday night,
"Everything Everywhere All At Once" lived up to its name by winning
gold in seven categories, including best picture, best actress for Michelle
Yeoh, and best directors for the Daniels.
"Thank you for all the little boys and girls who look
like me tonight," she said. "This is proof that dreams do come true.
And ladies, don't let anyone ever tell you you're past your prime."
When Jamie Lee Curtis won best supporting actress for
playing Deirdre Beaubeirdre in the popular independent movie, she paid tribute
to her Oscar-nominated parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis.
"My mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars
in different categories," Curtis said, beginning to cry as she accepted
the award. "I just won an Oscar!"
The nomination for Curtis comes more than 60 years after the
nomination for her mother's supporting performance in "Psycho." In
1959, "The Defiant Ones" earned her father a nomination for best
actor.
Brendan Fraser, the formerly ubiquitous '90s star, accepted
the prize for best actor for his performance in "The Whale" to a
thunderous applause.
Fraser is okay with people referring to his shift as a
"comeback." Yet he wouldn't use that word.
"If anything, this is a reintroduction more than a
comeback," he told The Associated Press in a December interview.
And while the evening featured performances of all five
nominated songs, it was Lady Gaga's bare-bones rendition of "Hold My
Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick" that stunned viewers. Gaga
substituted a t-shirt and sneakers for the dress and cosmetics she had been
wearing on the red carpet. Many were surprised by her moving performance since
she had not been slated to do so.
